Animals tend not to care that they are related.... and mounting is not always a sexual behaviour.

Keep them separate if you suspect your bitch may be in heat.
To assume siblings won't mate given the opportunity simply because they are siblings is highly irresponsible.

Yes, you can have a spay/abort done on the female. I don't think an abortion can be done without spaying though, because of the way a dog's uterus is. You can get a mismatch shot if you catch them in the act, to keep the eggs from implanting.

Why don't you get (at least) one of them spayed/neutered now? It would be a lot easier and cheaper than waiting for a crisis situation.

What do you mean about having to SPAY. I would recommend it in this case. I don't think it is always necessary, some people want the option to breed later.

It's hard to say without knowing the genetic background. You might get a healthy litter or you might get a few pups with health issues. I know besides disc issues they can have eye problems. As a breeder Pasarella would likely be able to share more info.

Okay ... get one of these dogs fixed NOW! before anything horrible happens, please! If it were me, I would spay the female, since in theory, males are easier to keep intact than females. But if you DONT think you can keep either of them responsibly than get them BOTH fixed.

 

Research litter-mate syndrome. Purchase a 2nd crate for the puppies so they have their own space. At the very least spay the female.

The pups dont care that they're siblings... When she comes into heat, they will breed. It could be a very expensive, heartbreaking deal for you....

First off we have to remember that they are animals, not fuzzy little people that have a strict moral code. When "nature calls" it's almost a gaurentee that they will succumb to their animal instincts. Based off your original post it seems that you don't have very much information on their family background and genetics involved in their lines. It's also appears that you probably don't have any experience with animal husbandry. Breeding, birthing, and raising a litter of puppies is not all rainbows and lollipops. At best it's messy and disgusting, at worst is heartbreaking and tragic. An inbreed litter has a significantly higher chance of being heartbreaking and tragic. You will be doubling up on major portion of the genes within the gene pool which increases the likelihood of negative genes showing up in the puppies and affecting their health.

If you allow your pups to breed, be it intentional or not, you will be considered a breeder. If you do not want to be a breeder and do not intend to let's your dog mate then it would be best to spay and neuter them ASAP. Is there a reason why you have not gotten them fixed yet?

 

Ok I do have a question... you say in your first post that you got them from a shelter and now from a breeder, so why are they not fixed yet? this was on 10-23-15, so which is it? how old are the dogs?

I have 2 dachshunds I got from the same breeder in Lebanon, Mo. I was told they are brother and sister. They certainly appear the same size and shape. My buddy says they have "the same eyes" too, so I think they are related.

If you did indeed get these dogs from a rescue. They should already be spayed and neutered. So the humping would just be do to high energy/play and possibly dominance.

I did an image search on the photo of the OP's dogs. Photo seems to originate with this breeder in Georgia, not with a Florida shelter or a Missouri breeder. The dogs' names are Tootsie Roll and Elmo Fudge.

OP, allowing a fictional dachshund to mount his fictional sister shouldn't result in any issues except maybe causing people whose dogs aren't imaginary to side-eye you a little bit.

 

Take it easy, inspector gadget. That photo was taken from the web. A very kind poster asked that I take it down because it wasn't mine so I did. I just liked the picture. Sheeesh. Irregardless, I'm not sure if the place I got my puppies was a shelter or a breeder per say. She had a lot of pens and she smoked a lot.

I agree with crantastic. Sine the possible breeding is only in your head, it would only really effect you if your imaginary dogs had a litter together. I guess it depends solely on how you feel about it.

Mounting behavior is very common in young dogs (many breeds, probably most breeds). Humping doesn't mean much. Unless it causes problems, eg., fights, it's best ignored. Who knows what drives this. Note, it happens in all combinations: male on male, male on female, female on male, and female on female. Intact and neutered.

I wouldn't want pups from a brother sister mating. Get one or the other, or both fixed.

Knowing what kind of person/business you got your dogs from, and whether or not they've had surgery, is just kind of basic dog ownership knowledge. Hopefully you can figure it out.

But if you need someone to tell you---it sounds like you got them from a puppymill. Shelters don't usually have large numbers of purebred puppies for sale. Puppymills do not take very good care of their dogs so they probably didn't have any vet care before you got them. I hope you've taken them in to the vet for shots and de-worming. Puppymills definitely don't spay/neuter the pups before selling them. Talk to your vet to schedule a spay. Yes, SPAY, don't say "spray" or "spaded" or the vet techs will be laughing at you when you leave . She's at the age where she might go into heat, you'll see her bleeding before she becomes fertile. If she starts bleeding, separate her from the male for a full month. If you want to avoid the bleeding and separation, have her spayed very soon.

 

And make sure she doesn't get stoned in the meantime.

Yeah I don't buy this story. I don't think I believe you have dogs period. Whether you got them from a breeder or rescue. You said on seperate occasions that that the shelter and breeder are in different cities. So until I see REAL pictures of your dogs I will hold off on any advice.

Most people here have wonderful senses of humor. It's just that none of the stuff you've posted is humorous.

We don't think it's funny when it looks like someone is messing with us or wasting our time. There are too many inconsistencies in your story. Too many pictures of dogs that are not yours. Too many outrageous allegations of things that have happened.

The only reason you're still here is because there is a very remote chance that it's all true. Also, a few find it all entertaining.

I also think there's an equal chance that there are dinosaurs still living somewhere on this planet.
