Why does craigslist attract all the nutjobs?

Honestly, WTF is wrong with the craigslist dog people? I don't get it. I've bought lots of stuff off craigslist before and had no issues. Not until I started looking for a dog and started looking at the dog section did I come across such insanity in one place. I don't get why it attracts all the nutjobs. This is what I saw today and I quote it verbatim:

I adopted a english bulldog named boo boo last thursday...when I went to get her she was in pretty bad shape...She had poop inbeded into her fur, she had no color, she was very timid, and She had some other problems that the vet took care of...She is a incredibly sweet dog. The reason I need to rehome her is like a lot of the lies the previous owner told me, she told me the dog had no agression issues...however she is very bad with other animals, she will not quit attacking my boston terrier...she needs to find a new asap (today) because right now I have the dogs separted and it is very stressfull for ME...I am asking a rehoming fee to cover my adoption fee and the vet bills...please only serious people email...I will let her go to the first available GOOD home that is able to come pick her up...She is incredibly sweet dog, she loves to follow me around and just lay by you and get petted. She seems to be very well potty trained as long as you let her out often...please email with questions..
So she adopts a dog, it doesn't work out and she wants all of her money back from someone else. Seriously? WTF is wrong with people? And why are all these people on craigslist?

We have those in our area too - and what's really alarming to me are the number of them that stress, over and over, that the dog MUST GO TODAY (today! needs to be gone by tonight! etc.). That's totally unrealistic to think someone is just going to pop onto craigslist that day and find one, plus they obviously couldn't care less where the dog goes, it just needs to be out of THEIR house immediately because THEY can't deal with it! Usually for the same reason - aggression - or because housetraining is a lot harder than they thought it would be. Makes me wonder what they do with them if they can't get rid of them =\

I think there was maybe a day difference between seeing Hope on CL and getting her. I would of gone that same day but i needed directions... ;)

I hate the people that dont list any kind of price, just "re-homing fee" and then you call and they want an arm/leg/chicken and after you hear them tell you- you want to poop a cow. lol.

How sad! :( I didn't even know Craigslist had a section for animals. Wow.

There are crazies everywhere. My mother-in-law is one of them, go figure, lol. She took in a few stray cats, 1 whom was pregnant and had 3 kittens (1 passed). This was about8 months ago. Anyways, she kept the kittens, but the mother they no longer wanted after 4-5wks of giving birth, so before even searching for a home, they took her to a "nice neighborhood" and dropped her off. Once domesticated and then let go, most have a hard time and rarely survive. They've done that with 2 cats in the last year and a half. I warned her there would not be a next time!! Some people shouldn't be allowed to have animals, just as some shouldn't be blessed with kids. Sickos!!

I actually think this is one of the less insane CL ads (assuming the person is being truthful). True, the fact that she took the dog without checking him out first is incredibly careless and irresponsible, but it's not unheard of for a new dog to exhibit DA after a few days in the new home. It doesn't say that she's expecting to recover 100% of her expenses by the re-homing fee, but it's perfectly reasonable to expect some to cover the vet expenses she paid for (that the new owner would have had to pay anyway). It's really not any different from a shelter's re-homing fees.

That might actually be why she went through CL instead of a rescue; she gets some money to offset the vet bills she's already paid.

I'm a nutjob, but I largely surf the pet section to find dogs that could use rescuing or to offer to help search on any lost pups.

Michigan's economy stinks, so 90% of the posts are dogs that have to go because the owners are moving. I'm way more offended by posts like this one, however, because look at that poor dogs ears. http://kalamazoo.craigslist.org/pet/1634775033.html

They've been flagged numerous times. The started leaving out the rehoming fee "because we had their ears cropped and shots done."

It's certainly not the craziest I've seen. The ones that always get me are the ones who are "desperately needing a dog/cat/ferret/oppossum". Drives me insane. They act like they will die if they don't get a dog yet all they have to do to get one (if they're really so desperate) is paddle their pumps down to the local Humane Society.

Lately I've seen a few different "I really want a small dog but can't afford to pay anything for one" ads, which I don't understand because most of the small dogs advertised on these classifieds sites (mostly shih tzus and combinations of shih tzu/yorkie/chihuahua/maltese, etc.) are from BYBs and in the $200-$400 range. If someone can't afford even that, they probably won't be willing to spend much on vet bills or decent food.

I also recently saw one from a woman who had a tiny two-year old pom, a family pet she loved but "didn't have time for" now that she was going back to work, blah blah blah, the usual. She said he could go to the first person who offered her $150. Way to care about your beloved pet, huh? I actually e-mailed about him -- I had visions of this poor (probably un-netuered) dog being snapped up by a BYB and I wanted to attempt to rehome him or give him to a rescue myself. She never replied, so I assume I was too late.

There's also been a semi-odd one that has been popping up regullarly for quite some time now:

Hi we are looking for a dalmatian puppy willing to travel and willing to pay we are not intested in having one shipped so please no emails involing shipping a puppy to us if you have one for sale please email we have been looking for one for some time so if you have one or are expecting a litter soon or know some one who is please contact us. Thankyou
Sounds like someone who wants to buy from a decent breeder, right? I sent an e-mail over a month ago with links to the one local breeder, plus breeder listings for the surrounding provinces and all of Canada. I included a little bit about what to look for in a breeder and about Dalmatian health problems to watch out for. The ad is still posted (with different wording each time) every week. Does this person really expect good Dalmatian breeders (or any Dal breeders at all, really) to be trolling the classifieds of Canada's smallest province looking for buyers? Show a little more initiative, people!

We posted an add looking for a small dog...although I didnt say we couldnt afford to pay anything for one, I did say I wasnt looking to pay a large rehome fee but would pay up to $200 depending on if the dog was spayed or neutered.

For us it wasnt about being able to pay the 200-400 I wasnt paying that much for mixed, or BYB dog that wasnt fixed. We ended up with a mixed puppy who was 12 weeks old and her rehome fee was $75 she came with a big bag of food (that we gave away :) )a bed and a blanket, and this funny water dispenser that looked like it was for a 100lb dog or maybe if we were leaving her for a week LOL

I don't see anything wrong with ads like yours, misty! I found an example of the ones I'm talking about:

WANTED:small dog
why do people ask so much for little dogs. i cant afford the high prices people are asking, but i would like to get a small breed chihuhua or even a terrior of some sort
Very different from yours, as you can see!

Yes I saw lots of those too :) I am glad we have Bella now...I dont have to search the classifieds any longer (although I do like to peek LOL)

Edited to add* I wonder who would actually give away their pet to someone who has already said they cant afford it?

Hmmm. Obviously I meant that it isn't ALWAYS realistic to think that you're going to find a home for your dog by the end of the day. Should have been more specific. From what I've seen, finding homes for the "happy" cute dogs is typically eaasier too (and small dogs seem to be going most, at least around here), as opposed to the paniced posters with a bully breed or giant mixed something, or something that more than likely has problems. Just the other day there was a post from a girl going on about how her "8 week old solid white mini dachshund puppy that i just got" had to go - to anyone, no specification on if it went to a good home or not - by the end of the day. I would have put money on her just having found out it had a health problem.
That said, it's great you were able to snag some right then, I'm just saying, this certainly isn't always the case and many times the poster seems a lot more concerned about getting the animal out of their way, then making sure it goes somewhere safe.

I don't have a problem with a reasonable re-home fee IF it covered vet care and they can give you the vet records, but I wouldn't pay more than $100 for a craigslist dog myself. Maybe $150 if it was already altered and really what I was looking for. As someone pointed out, a lot of rescues charge these fees, which I feel are reasonable.

I DO have an issue with people who are frantically trying to foist their dog off on the first person possible to get it out of their way - AND recoup their money on a dog that has problems (behavioral or medical).

Wow, you guys really find the nutjobs!! I just went through my towns craigslist, and cannot find anything like your posts. One of the pounds about 30 mins away from me, uses Craigslist to further advertise their dogs, as they're a high-kill shelter and the dogs only have 10 days to be adopted, once they are deemed adoptable.

The only thing semi-crazy I see is this:
http://newhaven.craigslist.org/pet/1637176024.html
but even that to me, is kind of cute. If I can find people to go with, I'll probably go! LOL

It bothers me that some people post stating purebred intact "insert breed here"...it just screams breed me :( Right now on our local craigslist there is a purebred intact pom who is just over a year old. There is a big list of stuff he comes with, then it states he is not for sale but we are looking to recover some of our costs including all of the stuff listed above .
