Strange question about the Thunder jacket.......

Ok, so most of you probably remember me mentioning about how scared Rigby is of company. (unless he knows them) The other day my son had a new friend over, and he came UNGLUED! He was barking, howling, acting like he was getting beat up, etc. He carried on and on, and no matter what we did, noting worked to calm him down. My son finally took his friend to his room, so he was out of sight. He did calm down, but you could tell he was uneasy. It doesn't matter if we talk loud, calmly, touch his nose, etc, he just doesn't pay attention to you. He's in his own world.....

So, I was wondering. Do you think a Thunder jacket would help? Usually we know when a friend will be coming over, or if our parents are coming over, etc. So, was thinking maybe we could put the jacket on right before hand. Or.....does that only work with separation anxiety and thunder??

I'm at my wits end. We try taking him out in public, and making sure he's around people a lot. He actually does fine in public. But, in his own home, he is deathly afraid of strangers. Once he knows somebody, he's good, and never has to reacquaint with them. But look out when somebody new comes in the house.......

Advice?? Thoughts?? Thanks!

I bought the Thundershirt to see if it would help with separation anxiety but I never ended up using it for that reason because Ryker thought that it was a normal jacket and that we were going to go somewhere with him (I felt really bad so I took it off). I was pretty skeptical of it anyways but the reviews online are pretty good. Worst case scenario, you buy it and it ends up being just another dog jacket lol. I think it would be worth a try.

I've known a few people personally who have used them, and they worked wonders. But, they were for other reasons. But, I figure it might be worth a try, since he's so anxious. I was wondering if anyone else had success with them in other situations besides thunder.

My mom's dog wears her Thundershirt as a regular jacket :p. It's nice because the fabric is like a heavy sweatshirt and it covers her chest/tummy too. It's really hard to find a dog coat that covers the chest.

Anyway, yeah it seems to help a bit with general anxiety but I guess that depends on the individual dog.

We use thunder shirts at the shelter to reduce generalized anxiety in dogs that have severe anxiety problems (either separation-based or general anxiety). One of the staff also uses one to calm down her pitt puppy, who is not anxious, just very excited all the time, and apparently putting the thunder shirt on him calms him right down.

Most of the anxious dogs at the shelter definitely improve with a thunder shirt. I've witnessed a dog's anxiety increase when his shirt came loose, and he calmed down again when I fixed it. But every dog is different, and it works better on some dogs than others. They're not super expensive though ($35?) so its worth a shot. If it doesn't work for you, you could always donate it to a local rescue. :)

Since you generally know when people are coming to visit, have you tried walking Rigby out into the yard when they arrive and introducing dog and human out in "public" and then walking back into the house together?

No, but he doesn't like people in the yard either. We live across from a dog park, and if I take him out, and there is somebody at the park he barks and barks and wants back inside. lol So I doubt that would work......
