My shepherd/sheltie mix is too afraid, it seems, to go poop!

Just over a week ago, we moved to a new neighbourhood. It's more of an urban area, in the city centre, more cars and noises than she's used to. It's also on the water so the wind tends to whip about quite fiercely. I know she has to go, and she knows she does too. But she gets so distracted and walks around with tail between her legs, head and ears down. I try to comfort her and let her know I'm right here, but she just won't go. She's gone on the floor of the house twice in as many days. What can I do to get her acclimatized to the new surroundings?

Any advice would be appreciated.

ilovemychihuahua has idea that I think you should explore. Walking helps to stimulate elimination. As your dog takes in all the new smells, she will want to make her surroundings familiar, and dogs do this by eliminating. So, when you think you're dog needs to go, go for a nice walk. Don't focus on her, just keep moving forward. The fact that you give her affection when she seems afraid actually is reinforcing the behavior. You're better off ignoring these behaviors. The best time to give any dog affection is when they are calm, relaxed, and not stressed. You can start acclimating your dog to her new surroundings by taking her for short walks, at least twice a day, and try to build up on the extent of the walk over time. Give her time to adjust, take it slow, and if she seems to stressed, try again later. And, if you know a spot where other dogs eliminate this may help too. Just let her sniff around, she'll find a spot.
