Puppy Biting plants and eatting grass

So my 14 week old bull/neo mastiff mix puppy is a great little guy. He is full of all sorts of puppy energy, loves to go on walks around the block, and to chase me in the backyard. So far all his training is going well, he rarely has potty accidents in the house, and has finally stopped trying to eat the cats, lol.

The only problems I am having with him now are his plant biting habits. We have 3, 9 foot palm tree's in our back yard, and he loves to bite the trunks of the tree and rip off bark. He also, has been attacking the lower hanging branches of the tree. I have tried "Bitter Apple" and physically moving him away from the tree's when he's doing it, but that doesn't seem to help. Any time he gets all excited, he goes right after the tree's. Is there anything I can do to get it through his puppy head that he isn't allowed to bite the tree's or eat grass?

Or is there a particular reason, that he might be doing this? He gets lots of attention, and plenty of excercise for a puppy his age.

Also, he's been digging at the base of the tree's from time to time. Any suggestions?

Well, my pups eat grass when they're hungry (always, they're hounds... :p) or their tummies are upset. If I notice them acting like cows after a meal, I usually give them some pepsid AC.

Careful about the palms, especially. I know that the fruits/nuts of the Sago palms at least are *highly* toxic to dogs. Can't remember if any others are. You might want to do some research, and fence them off if it's appropriate. I've never managed to get mine to stop chewing on things in the yard, I've simply fenced off areas if it's appropriate and gotten a garden shed for what's portable.

Thanks for the advice. Fortunaly, the palms in my back yard don't produce any fruit or nuts, at least none that I've noticed. I'll keep an eye out for that to make sure that if it does start producing nuts or fruit, that he can't get anywhere near the tree's

Eating grass seems to be a normal behavior for dogs even though we tend
to think that their diet should consist of other things. There is no harm your dog does this. Several studies have been done to relate this action to some sort of illness, mineral deficiency, lack of roughage in the diet etc. But as per my experience, it is harmless. Even if you try to break this grass eating habit, I dont think it will work as this is a natural behaviour.
Digging is a natural instinct that is also a favorite past time to all dogs. The more sporting that the dog’s breed is, the more that they love to dig.
