How to switch from raw to kibble?

So, I am going to try kibble to see if it might help Iorek's itching. There is no chicken and no grains so I am hoping it might help.

I was at the vet today with Brom and he suggested that we switch from raw to kibble slowly so it doesn't cause stomach upset. I thought that mixing raw and kibble in the same meal was a bad idea.

My plan was to break their food for the day up over a bunch of small meals and also to give them acidophilus to help with the switch.

What do you think?

I switched cold turkey, the same way (and for the same reasons) that I switched kibble to raw cold turkey. My dogs have stomachs of steel so no acidophilus was needed, but if you think it's a good idea, go ahead.

My raw fed dogs have no trouble going on kibble for a few days. On the rare occasions that I have boarded dogs over the years, they eat whatever the kennel is feeding while they are there, come back home to raw, no problems.

So, I say just do it. And good luck I hope it helps him!

I recently switched my pack to raw, and I'm part of a co-op that picks up meat once a month. Towards the end of the month, I was getting low, so there was a week or so when the dogs were getting raw one day, kibble the next, etc. None of them had any problems.

Most mushers feed their dogs meat in the AM and kibble in the PM (not even grain-free kibble, either), and some even make a stew of meat, kibble and water. I've never heard of anyone having any problems from this practice, and it's pretty universally accepted among sleddog owners, so I don't tend to worry much about the dreaded "mixing".

I'm starting Bailey and the dachshund on raw and will likely have to do it only once per day. Some days I am not the one feeding their dinner (depending on my work schedule) and it would be difficult for someone else to feed the raw. I'm glad to hear it can be done, Nekomi!

Well, the doggies have had supper last night and breakfast this morning, both kibble only. I gave them acidophilus yesterday and I will give them more today (24 hours after the last one). So far so good (knock on wood!). I have 2 doggies that are super excited about their food and so far no one has had any diarrhea. Which is awesome since Brom just went to the vet yesterday for diarrhea! Just like a car you take to the garage and the problems stops... Oh well, they are sending a stool sample to a vet school to get it tested so we can see what is/was going on.

Just on a little side note: Iorek is eating his food and is super excited about it. When he was eating kibble before he was not interested in it (not grain free, duck formula) and would leave it all day before eating it. Now he is eating all of it and licking the bowl clean and then looking to lick out Brom's bowl :D Yay!
