Dog Barking Problem

I have a jack russel of about 2 years old. He is a very smart dog with a small annoyance. Every time I open the backdoor he runs to the top of the swimming pool and starts to bark, he continues to bark until I say "NO!", There i nothing in that environment that i can remove, or that i can think of that he is barking at. He loves to swim and nobody stops him if he wants to swim except when he wants to jump in I must say "NO!" else he will jump in.

The swimming is not the problem, the senseless barking is the big problem.

I firmly believe he is barking at the water because he is excited and wants to go swimming. :) If you say " No " and he stops barking ... that is great! :) ... better than my dogs will listen to! :) My dogs ignore that word............... I am of no help with the barking issue........

Sounds like a wonderful dog. :)

Hello and welcome! Feel free to share pics if you have any you would like to share! :)

Trying to bump this up ... maybe someone will have an answer to your problem. :)

Doesn't sound senseless at all.

Here's how I hear the conversation:
"Hey Dad look at that water doesn't it look GREAT! C'mon let's go swimming."
"No."
"Ok."

If you don't like saying no, you could probably train him to accept some kind of gesture instead. A wave of the hand, a shake of the head, anything really, just do it consistently every time you say "no," eventually you can drop the verbal cue.

Whenever my westie sees a squirrel he barks and barks until I say, "Ok, that's enough Scout, thanks."
