What Im worried about is, she hacks alot, its a weezing, hacking, kinda gagging sound. Shes not choking on anything, so Im a little nervous. Any suggestions? PLease help!!!

Is it hacking like about to throw up, or a hacking cough? Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference in dogs. I've seen a lot of owners who think they're dog is gagging, when it's actually coughing. It could be the start of kennel cough or another respiratory problem.

I'd call up your vet and schedule an appointment. It's always a good idea to get a new pup checked by your own vet soon after you get her.

Its deffinitly not right after eating. She does it alot, it woke me up several times in the middle of the night. She seems completly fine after. As if its not even bothering her one bit, but it bothers me. Shes only 2 pounds if that, I am just worried cause we dont have the money for the vet for another month. And yes, she gets plenty of exercise. Maybe its just kinda of digesting? Or its what u say a cough?

It's not something that should wait a month. I understand (ooooh, do I understand!) being short on cash, but with pet ownership comes responsiblities. Sometimes you have to get yourself into a little debt for your little ones. I work for a vet, but my gang always seems to pick after hours, weekends, holidays and vacations to be sick, so I've had to put emergency visits on credit cards a couple of times.

Since you live in a bigger city, there's probably low cost services available. Call your local shelter or SPCA to find out where they are. There's also a service called "care credit" you can look into, which is a low interest credit card for medical emergencies (human and animal).

Have you posted this in the medical section? There's so many things this could be, and a vet check is definitely in order. Some things just can't wait til next month. Taking on the responsibility of a dog requires the owner to supply what that dog needs, especially medical care.

One possibility to add to the ones above is collapsing trachea. But you also have to be careful that you aren't training the dog to cough. If you baby her and give her lots of attention when she does cough, you have effectively taught her to keep coughing. It's important to rule out medical causes, but just be aware how you are reacting when she does cough.

One more thing - where did your husband get this dog? Some sources offer free vet visits within the first few days or week, as part of the sale.

Well thank you, I will get her to the Vet as soon as I can, but with only 50 buckx in our account and we dont own a credit card becasue we dont believe in them, I have no way of taking her now. Payday is in 2 weeks, She'll go then, hopefully the checkup is cheap. My husband doesnt understand the fact that dogs are family members too an they cost just as much as regular kids.

Congrats on the new puppy. Anyway....I have a little chihuahua, and sometimes she does this little sneezing thing. I talked to my vet, and he said because they are little and so low to the ground, they do catch a lot of dust and pollen and things in their noses. However since you just got it, kennel cough would be another possibility. Get it checked out. Have fun with that new baby.

First let me say, what a great dog for a pet... they have soooo much personality! A vet visit is in order to rule out the things talked about above. Where did you get the dog? Have you called them to see what they say? One of my Chihuahua is older and has allergies but I wouldn't try to dx anything like this myself. This is something you want a vet to check to rule out everything that it could be- some are serious, others are not..... Should you find it is an attention getting measure- I actually have a Chihuahua who saw the attention and medication the allergic Chi was getting (think 'treat' to Chi) and guess what, she decided to cough herself- they are so smart. At any rate, to break this bad habit, I put some lemon juice on spoon and said, "Heres some lemon juice" each time she tried that... it only took about 4 times and she has almost stopped this behavior. Now she only does this when my mother visits, (she spoils her). At this point, all I do is ask, "do you want some lemon juice?' and guess what.. no cough...lol...
But, please don't assume anything... take her to be checked the minute you can... call around to see if assistance is avail. in your area as suggested. This could be something that needs attention or it could be minor... better safe than sorry. One thing that came to mind when you said she wakes you was, do you have carpet? If so, do you sprinkle carpet fresh or spray the area? Does she cough outside and inside the home? Does she do this more when she exercises, plays or gets excited? These are some answers that might come in handy at the vet visit. Good luck and enjoy your baby.

Congratulations on your new puppy. When I bought my dog home he had a slight cough. I took him to the vet right away, it turned out to be kennel cough, they put him on antibotics, it didn't work, then I had to take him to the vet weekly for an intravenious shot, finally he was hospitalized. My poor baby. He's fine now. Get it checked out Right Away by your vet. It's heartbreaking to see them in the hosptial.

Good Luck! Hope all turns out well.

My Chi has a weezing snorting coughy sound he makes when he gets excited. It sounds terrible and at first we thought something was terribly wrong with him but it turns out he just tries to breath too much too fast when he's excited.

Still, the vet is a good idea!
