I'd pass up on the Rawhide in favor for a digestible chew. Bully sticks (recommend Best Bully Sticks) are my favorite to give to my dog.

I give RMBs and bully sticks/tendons.

I also give non-edible chews like Nylabones but they're not really treats per se.

 

Raw hides aren't the easiest to digest and stories of blockages from them are common enough.

I'd stick to cow&pig ears bully sticks and raw meaty bones

 

I'm going to go against the trend here but I give rawhides to my dog and I gave them to our last dog.

I buy Good Buddy rawhides that are sourced and made in the USA. We gave our last dog Dingos but since they're made in China I don't give them anymore.

Yes, they can be dangerous depending on the dog so you'll need to make sure your dog is OK with them. My thoughts are 1000's of dogs chew them and if they were very dangerous then you'd hear more about it. People give antlers and dogs chip teeth. Dogs rip up chew toys and eat whatever ... accidents can happen with anything.

 

So i'll not give him the rawhide bone!

I have never seen a dog get intestinal blockage from a rawhide. I am sure it can happen but I have never ever rinsed something off and said yep it is a rawhide. I have seen underwear (seems to be the #1 choice), socks, cat toys (mice), rope toys, string, carpet, woodchips, that meat netting, ornament. I think the one that sticks out the most is the GSP who swallowed a giant size Kong toy whole. I have seen numerous dogs chip their upper 4th premolar (carnasal tooth) on antlers, raw bones (generally the big weight bearing bones). I have seen dogs get diarrhea after gnawing on a smoked bone. I have seen dogs get so impacted because they have had way too much bone that the dog had to be sedated and the impaction removed. I have seen dogs get the bone stuck on the lower canines of the mouth and the dog had to be sedated and the bone cut in order to remove the bone from the teeth. With rawhides it seems to be more of the chips that the dogs get all soggy and try to swallow. This is where the big problem with rawhides seems to be.


I think anything you give your dog could pose a danger and the dog should be monitored during the time it is playing with anything. I have seen something as simple as a towel given to a dog to lay on in its cage kill a dog.
