So I learned a lot about blue buffalo after asking about food here at the forumn.

I am in the midst of trying to get my state senator here in MA to sponsor a bill in MA that will require all pet food sold in the state to list where the food comes from. Hopefully something will come of this.

My other issue is that if Blue Buffalo is so looked down upon in the dog world then why do we frequent a site that allows them to advertise on here?

And just for the record I am feeding my dog blue now as it is the only food I have used thus far that has firmed up his stool.

Even the people at my doggy day care know about the issue of Blue not disclosing where the food comes from.

If your dog does fine on it, then feel free to keep feeding of course.

Some people (myself included) are wary of Blue Buffalo because they don't explain where they source any of their ingredients from.

I found this on another dog food forum.

Response from Blue Buffalo:
Hi Denise,

Thank you for taking the time to contact BLUE. Our foods all are manufactured
here in the USA. Many of our ingredients, such as our grains and meats, come
from the USA except for our lamb which can be free range from New Zealand. Where
possible our suppliers are instructed to source their ingredients from the US.
Where the ingredients are not readily available in the US, such as many
vitamins, minerals and nutriceuticals, they work only with reputable foreign
suppliers, and subject all ingredients to rigorous quality testing. All of our
ingredients are USDA approved and inspected.

I hope this helps!

Take care,
Kim

Overall I think blue buffalo is one of the better foods out there. My aussie pup Ammy was on blue buffalo puppy but it didn't agree with her. We're on blue wilderness now and she really likes it and is doing well poop wise on it. They're the same company and blue wilderness has always had a great nutrition rating. I'm happy with them :)

I'm not a huge fan of blue buffalo either..... The not disclosing who exactly they get their ingredients from and the excess mineral problem causing kidney failure is enough for me to stay FAR away...... I think it's to expensive for what it is too.... They advertise like a crazy person and I just think they are like the holistic version of science diet.... I would feed science diet cans before I touched anything blue....

Blue is OK, but they are on the expensive side. Blue Wilderness puppy was too rich for my pup. We feed Canidae and they are doing fine, it's also better priced. Many pet foods have had recalls because of companies trying to cut costs... it seems like foods cycle over the years (in their quality).

I couldn't agree more. The food I use tell you exactly where the meats and all other ingredients come from including the names of the commercial suppliers if there are any. Some ingredients are caught wild. All the countries are disclosed. Italy (all meat but lamb NZ), Denmark (all fish), France/Spain (all egg), all vegetable ingredients (Italy) and all vitamins (Italy).

They even provide the names of the companies like:

Companies that do not tell you thinks have something to hide.

That is easy to answer because in the USA there are no rules prohibiting the use of condemned and diseased animals in the food unless the food is made under EU Certification. There are no rules that suppliers be inspected companies unless the food is made under EU Certification or the company voluntarily submits.

The only rule is that the food must be safe to eat, but that is very broad and vague.

All you have to go on is their word and that is not good enough.
