I don't mind walking my neighbors dogs for them, it helps them out and I like helping people. Normally when I walk a neighbor's dog they'll tell me what the dog is good with and what s/he isn't; normally the ones I've walked are very well behaved, so if I said "come" cause a car was coming and we were crossing the street, the dog would come.
Lately though, I've walked two dogs owned by two different owners. The Basset Hound is extremely stubborn and will just plop down when she feels like it. My voice has gotten very deep when I tell her to "come" and I'll give her a good tug on the leash or she just decides to walk in the street and I don't want that to happen! Or I bait her with a treat, but that's giving in to her.
The other dog (a small mixed breed) dashes in the street too even with a short leash. And he's stubborn to the point where I have to pick him up to move him. I can't pick him up anymore because last week I got contact dermatitis and I think it was because of coming into contact with his fur or...I'm not sure really. I pulled him today with a firm "come", but his collar almost slipped off.
I reward both of them with praise (and sometimes treats) after they've listened to me, but I never tell the owner they were stubborn when walking with me. I always give glowing reports, but my question is: should I train them to "come" when I say so?
I don't want them hurt and the way people drive in our complex is maddening. They do not go 15mph. Should I ask the owner first or do you think it's okay for me to teach them "come" when they're with me?
Thanks guys.
