I had similar experience using Frontline. Switched to VetGard. Same ingredients as Advantage II, but at much lower cost.
Stay on the frequent vacuuming and washing.... 3 life stages of the flea are not on the animal. Only adults are on the animal for the blood meal, then immediately begin to lay eggs. The eggs fall off the animal.......
