I've had him for 1.5 years now. We have a very small courtyard/backyard area at our complex where I let him go out to do his business. For the first many months he went out there no problems. Then all of the sudden, I noticed he started eating his own poop. And since then (for the past several months) he has not stopped. I have been picking after him now, but every once in a while I forgot to clean it up before I let him out again to go pee or something. For example, I just took him out an hour ago and he did his business. I went to the gym, came back and let him out for 5 minutes. He came back inside and his poop was gone. It's really frustrating and quite gross.

I feed him properly and I fee him one of the better quality foods (california natural), so I don't see how he's starving or anything. In fact he has gained a little bit of weight so I cut back on his food a little bit, so it can't be that I wasn't feeding him enough.

I just can't figure it out... it's not normal dog instinct to eat their own feces so there's gotta be a reason he's doing it, unless he's truly just dumb.

There's many reasons why he could be eating his poop.

He may be hungry, or have worms, maybe he's bored, maybe he likes the taste, maybe he's doing it for attention, he could be stressed or anxious, he could be just cleaning up after himself.
