I had Sadie at the store yesterday working with her. Sadie's been wary of children for a while but has come a long way in a few weeks. A family with 3 kids stopped to greet her and she was doing great. The kids were nicely petting her and asking her to do tricks, and it was going very well. We were talking and the mom kneeled down next to Sadie and was petting her. I watch Sadie very closely whenever stuff like this is going on so I can remove her before she gets uncomfortable if I need to, and she was LOVING it, yay petting!

So one kid goes to pet Sadie and the mom says "Don't get so close to the dog's face!" (which okay that is good advice) and wraps her hand around my dog's mouth and turns Sadie's head the other way.

WTF????

I was just shocked. I quietly got Sadie and left and went to go tell my supervisor. I showed her what happened and she was equally shocked.

Who the hell thinks to grab a dog's mouth AS they are telling their kid not to go near the dog's mouth, let alone when the dog is calmly enjoying the petting?

What would you have done? I'm sure plenty of people would have gone off on this crazy lady, but keep in mind this is where I work and people do often recognize me especially after meeting Sadie. And Sadie was fine, she didn't even seem to notice. If Sadie had gotten hurt I probably would have made a big deal about it, but she has no problem with adults touching her face.

Stupid crazy people.

Look at it this way, it was a scary tale that turned into a fairy tale. It could have been a disaster instead it was a nice learning experience for Sadie. It also told you a tad more about your dog which is always good. It also will help you with you next encounter with store monsters(kids):D

What did Sadie learn? And it didn't teach me anything about my dog. Sadie wasn't at fault here, go read it again. She was doing wonderfully.

Part of me would have been shocked and somewhat annoyed, but most of me would be glad that Sadie's socialisation had gotten so far. I think this is more in line with what Wvasko meant. I don't think he was being negative.

Having said that, I might have told the woman as gently as possible that face contact with strangers is very discomforting to a dog -- as it would be to any creature -- and that just as she should avoid getting too close to a strange dog's face, she should also avoid touching or holding it, for her own safety.

I'm going to stay off your stuff as you turn argumentative at the drop of a hat. I must rub you the wrong way. #1. Dogs learn by experiences in life, There is a possibility that Sadie learned from an experience with a child that she did not get hurt and could make her more trusting of children. Why not if she had got hurt from child it could have gone the other way and made her insecure. Why would I have to go back and read post, I never in any way said Sadie did anything wrong(I thought the whole thing was positive). Now if you did not learn anything about your dog I am happy for you because you know everything there is to know about your dog and life is good. I have had our personal dog for 9 yrs and every once in a while she shows me something brand new in her lifestyle as she changes (getting even older) But that just me I have always said I'm not the brightest bulb in the box. I'm gone

Jesi, two days ago I let Spunky offleash for twenty minutes. She behaved like an angel. In that twenty minutes I learned much more about her than I ever expected to learn about her at this stage of her life. Take that into consideration, then re-read Wvasko's post.

I don't really see the huge deal or cause for shock? I would have said, "Careful there. Most dogs don't like their faces touched like that." I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

Maybe I'm just more laid back.

I think Sadie handled it well. Even tho this was an invasive (and stupid) move on the part of the Mother of these kids, she doesn't sound like she was doing it in a mean way. What you learned about your dog is that she is becoming so well socialized that "Sadie was fine, she didn't even seem to notice"!! My goodness I woud just be so PROUD of my dog!

What did Sadie learn? Kids are OK. Sometimes people may touch dogs in ways they might not like, but that doesn't always hurt the dog and allows the dog to build to yet another level of tolerance. I would have (again) been so pround of my dog!!

Would I have been annoyed by the woman? Yes. Since Sadie was being good, and was continuing to enjoy the petting, I would have used this as an opportunity to educate this lady a little (not gone off on her.. trust me on this.. in my years of ancientness, going off on people rarely teaches anything.. and can end up making YOU the crazy person! LOL).

You handled it well, for you and for your dog. The only thing I would have done different is the educating part unless I was afraid my dog might take offense and bite.

I would be:

"Sadie, dont go too close to the kid's face" then I'll wrap my hand around the kids face and turn her/him the other way. :D

Seriously, if you are not comfortable with your child petting a dog, then dont let them. SOME PEOPLE REALLY.

Im glad you just decided to walk away. :)

I would think the OP should have learned something from this whole experience, that being, when a stranger starts getting real close to you and your dog be more prepared to expect the unexpected.

MVasko is one of the people here that makes this site the high status it is. So is Elana55. cannot forget her:)

Then again I'mm pretty goo.... not I won't go that far:p

I'm not being argumentative, I just didn't see anything new about Sadie there. She's been getting better and better with kids over the past few weeks. I was very proud of her, yes.

First want to apologize to the OP for changing the subject matter!

Just to fantasize, If God forbid, something happened to my wife, and number 55 and I decided to get together, these are my requirements....

1. Must love Dogs
2.love music
3.love boating,(large Boat)
4. Always be in a happy mood lol, even at IRS time

Then we got united on Dog & puppy forums, and Carla would be our best man!

The only problem I see is how will my min-schnauzers get along with your GD, but they all can sprekum da Doitch.:D

I see no problem BabSD... I like all kinds of music. Really do. Classical and (light) Opera right up to modern vocal.
I would not be on this site if I didn't love dogs.... so that is good..

And my Grandfather was a Commander in the Navy and I would love for you to show me how to use his sextant! I believe the entire world should be measured in Knots and Nautical miles.. and no one would ever get lost.

I can do all that.. especially the last one because anyone who can AFFORD a LARGE boat can AFFORD to smile at IRS time... :D Why would I frown?

Besides, you are going to let me have sheep and a horse so those dogs we love can learn to herd... (sheep are cool anyhow).
And one month a year you are going to be VERY supportive of my going to Hot Springs and volunteer for the Wild Horse Sanctuary when they have the sun dance.

My dog has NO idea what mean is. She hasn't a clue. Mini schnauzers sort of are like her cats in size and she does love her cats! She is a gentle dog and I have heard nothing but good about Schnauzers.

This could work....

I love all you guys,(girls) , :D, never would want to get on your bad side in a post!!! I studied how to use the sextant, ( and for you young kids has nothing to do with sex) But how to navigate large bodies of water where you do not see the shore line. But now with all the new sat aids who need the old fashion way except when you lose power!!:D

I am going to post a picture of me and Doc my male dog now that I have photobucket or what ever it is just takes me time to figure it out!:)

If I had sheep, they would be allowed in the house, and I would buy sheep beds for them. Would put up a baby gate to keep them in the sheep bedroom. Babsd lol

I don't let random stranger kids get close to the sharp end of my dogs. Kids can act strangely, move oddly/quickly and tend to make high pitched, loud and strange noises that can scare a dog. It *probably* wouldn't be a big deal in our dogs, but why take the chance. They're big dogs and there is plenty of room to pet them on their back. In our case, the mother never would have felt she needed to intervene...I would have already handled the situation. I guess I just don't see what happened as a huge deal. My dogs would have dealt with a stranger touching their face and it wouldn't have been a big deal to them either.
