German shepherds do come in sable, so it's possible this one's all or mostly German Shepherd (though it looks like a younger one if so). There's people here with way more GSD experience than I have though, so I'm open to being proven wrong! Otherwise, possibly a husky/GSD mix?

Were you told he was a purebred? Or is he a known mixed breed?

GSD come in a wide variety of colors, There is one called "patterned sable" where the dog has a combination of sable and tan markings. Other breeds can also have similar coring and markings.

I think Sable German Shepherd (working lines). Any mix might be Australian Cattle dog.. just based on the ear size and the tan legs.. and that may be wrong as the angle makes the ears seem smaller. A side shot (stacked) and something to show scale (like a shoe or a glove) along with a head shot with the camera held at the same level as the dog's head would be helpful.
