You need to confine him using a crate and an x pen. Put the crate attached to the pen as a place he can go in like a den (use a plastic crate, NOT a wire crate). Put the puppy pads inside the xpen. Leave him there. Eventually he will have to poop on the pads. I suggest a hard surface floor like the kitchen.

You can also try getting a tray or pan and putting some cedar shavings in that in the X pen along with the pads. He might fine the shavings more inviting to use than the pads.

When you take him out of the X pen to play with you, keep a leash on him so he cannot sneak off and go behind the recliner or anywhere else.

Have you used an enzymic cleaner behind the recliner?

My pup used to sneak off and poop in my room! All I had to do was restrict his access to my room for a while until he understood he was to poop outside. Sorry I don't know how to train with wee pads....
But for pottying outside, if my pup has an accident inside, I don't react, I calmy bring him outside to finish (or just to show him where I want him to potty) and clean it up inside without saying anything.

Not saying you have, but try not to yell/scold the pup for pooing behind the chair, that could confuse him and he thinks pottying is bad in general, so he may sneak off to do it without your presense.

Also watch for signs he has to poop potty like sniffing off, circling, especially during/after play and after his meal. Bring him to the potty pad when you notice he is about to poop. I wonder if a litter box area would be nicer to poop in?

we just dont have the room for a big metal pen he is a Chunhui small and we tried a fabric pen pretty strong stuff and he almost knocked it over .
This pen is what I was thinking of. It is 2 feet by 2 feet and two feet high. That is pretty small and made for toy breeds.

Yes, the dog can tip a fabric pen and she may move this around some, but the size is small and it beats having the dog poop behind the recliner.
