It seems everytime I let my puppy out of the crate (after like a 4 hour period), he goes right for the water and just drinks it dry. I was told I shouldn't leave water in the crate (to keep him from using the bathroom there), but should I be concerned about dehydration? Does anyone think it's even an issue? thoughts?

I have a water bottle on all of my crates....but they did not get them until we had their potty schedule down pat and they could hold their pee for more then a few hours.

Four hours without water isn't an issue. Once the potty schedule is fully under control then you can allow 24/7 access to water.

How hot is it where you keep the crate (I see you are from LA)? Dogs pant to cool themselves and a dog in a hot climate will use a LOT of water evaporating from his lungs to stay cool.

From your description AND if it is very hot where you are, I would hesitate to withold water (especially if this dog is showing NO inclination to pee in the crate).
