I've always heard that dogs that have puppies than spayed make better dogs than spayed and not having puppies.I want to have mine spayed, she just turned four months. Is this just a myth,or is there any truth to it? Also, when is the right age for dogs,or pups to be spayed? I've always heard 6 months.I heard that dogs that don't have puppies and spayed,it changes their temperment.I don't want that to happen because she has such a sweet temperment.

That's a myth.

6 months is about right, most people like to wait for their female to have their first heat, then get them spayed.

Sounds like something the BYB's came up with in order to justify breeding willy nilly...

And if it's any consolation, my three spayed females -who have never had puppies- have turned out to be some of the best dogs I know of.

Myth - actually by having her spayed before having puppies helps cut her risk for certain kinds of cancers. At least that's what my vet said! :D

I think spayed females make the best dogs. You don't have to worry about them sneaking off or any males sneaking in when she is in season! (I've seen males climb fences to get in with females in season! )

Myth.

Tessa was spayed prior to 6 months and her temperment was not at all changed, nor did she get fat (another well known myth :D).

I did not wait for her to have her first heat...

Never seen it (a personality change) happen in any of my dogs. None of them ever had puppies.

One I had done at a year, one was almost four.

My sister had a pit bull that ate through the bathroom door when she was in heat.I'm also trying to avoid a fence climbing female.

Total 100% myth, by spaying your dog BEFORE their first cycle you are taking away so many illnesses that can crop up and can all be prevented by a simple spay. And in all honesty, its much cheaper to spay, cancer costs a fortune to treat, if a bitch has trouble whelping that c-section will also cost money, it may cost her life etc etc...Not saying you are wanting to breed, but it does happen, males can smell a dog in season from pretty far away. They have been known to jump fences, rape a bitch on a wlk with her owner, get nasty etc etc...Its uncomfortable for them to be in heat.
