hi, im an owner of a 1 year old lhasa bischon mix. ive been clicker training her since ive had her. she knows the basic commands and a few tricks, like stand on two feet, weave though my legs, and jump. she also knows how to run after a toy, the start of fetching. but i cant seem to get her to hold on to the ball or thing i had her fetch. she just quickly runs after it. grabs it. and when i ask her to come, she'll just drop it. and run back to me.

any suggestions.. thanks!

do you guys have any other tricks that a small dog can do?

The fetch is really a lot of individual behaviors that are put together into a single exercise.

You can break down the retrieve into:

  • basic position
  • send out
  • taking the item
  • returning with item
  • front
  • holding for cue
  • release of object
  • basic position
One of these behaviors is the HOLD. Teach this behavior by itself. Once it is solid, you can back chain it.

thanks.. training the hold sounds good.

i have been trying short distances, but she still would drop it when i ask her to come back.

i think i will try to do the hold first and see what happens next. thanks!
