Training Advice

I'd like to use this thread for anyone who wants advice in training their dog. Maybe this can later on be turned into a sticky:wink:

I'll start it off

--> Keep it short, simple and interesting

--> It's okay if he/or she doesn't get it immediately

--> Breathe and remember to have patience.

--> Use different voice tones and at correct times

--> When teaching tricks like "play dead", teach it in small sections at a time

You have to accept that maybe you're dog isn't stupid or obstinate, maybe you're just not training well. (I've been guilty of this one. Kabota's IQ skyrocketed once I switched from words to hand gestures.)
Make everything a game. A competitive one, imo, is even better.

I know Wally attention span, especially for "review" stuff really shot up when it turned into a game using what he's learned (and if I can, what he's currently trying to master).

This double once reviewing went from:

"Okay, I didn't get it, so I'll just try to get it next time"

to

"WTF? Y...you ate my reward?! You...CAD! Oh screw this - do another one!"

He literally tilted his head and looked at me like "I don't believe what I'm seeing" the first time I did it. Sometimes I wonder if we're partners or friendly rivals LOL
