Trained Chihuahua still marking indoors

Our chihuahua is toilet trained to piss and poop outside. Recently he has also been bell trained to ring a bell by the front door to go out to the loo. He’s good at it and will always ring the bell to ask to go out now. This morning I left him downstairs and took a video call without feeding him first. Before I left him he had rung the bell and took a poop and a piss outside. I decided to give him some space as he was sleeping on the couch and I thought it would be nice to see if he could be responsible by himself. I usually bring him upstairs because I don’t trust him by himself. I wanted to test him to see if he would do anything, I came back downstairs and he had marked/pissed on the laundry basket. It’s really killing me that this dog can’t be trusted to be alone no matter how many hours of training I do with him.I’ve read a lot of dog books and I’ve spent hours training him. I just don’t understand why he would do this? He hasn’t marked inside in months and months. Could it have anything to do with me breaking routine and not bringing him upstairs with me? Usually, I feed him after my call anyway so I don’t know if that’s got anything to do with it...but my call did go for about 35 mins longer than usual.I’m just so frustrated with this dog. I walk him 3km a day at least every day...I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong...I could do with any advice you can give...thank you

You could try a belly band (male diaper) so that when he tries to mark it is contained and a bit uncomfortable.

I will also add that this is not an unusual issue in very small dogs. I would get the belly band and keep at doing what you are doing.. and not trust him.
Thanks for your reply. Would you treat this as a training method? Like you only leave him alone with the band and as long as he doesn’t piss in the band you gradually start trying to leave him alone again without the band? Or are you thinking of this as a permanent solution?
All you can do is try it and see if the behavior changes. I would not be in a rush to leave him alone without the band.
Right I see, and the way you can see if the behaviour changes is if he doesn’t piss in the band? Then you can test him again. I suppose...
