is it healthy for someone to buzz their Malemute/chow mix all the way down every 3 years or so? i was just curious, in my grooming course i read that it is cruel to do so, but the owner insists.... what to do.
Is shaving the dog going to actually hurt it? No, the act of shaving the dog is going to cause no harm. However, depending on how short the dog is taken down, it can be susceptible to sunburn and overheating. And the coat will be ruined and probably take at least 3 years to even look semi normal again, if ever.
I have several double coated dogs (clients) that I clip right down. No, it's not good for the coat -- it usually won't grow back properly, and sometimes it won't grow back at all. Even if it's fine once or twice -- eventually it won't be. Not to mention the dog now has no insulation and is susceptible to sunburn.
Though I must admit.. I would FAR rather clip off an extremely hairy or matted dog than deal with all that long hair (bathe, blowdry, dematt and brush out).
