Everyone has a different approach based on the daily activities of their dogs, feeding schedules and water intake. Some take them out a couple times a night until they're about 6 months old.

I've raised 14 dogs from puppies and rarely had to make a middle of the night potty trip. Sleep slows down all the body functions and if they're really sleeping the whole night they shouldn't have to go.
