We've had Hamilton in an expen during the day since we brought him home six months ago. He's a doxie mix, and 8 months old now. Yesterday, it seems, he figured out how to escape. Yesterday my husband came home to walk him at lunch and he was right there at the front door, proud as punch, wagging his tail happy to see him. He thought maybe I forgot to put him in or something, put him back when he went back to work, and when I came home after work, sure enough there he is. Today I removed the soft crate he liked to sleep in, thinking maybe he was using it to climb over the top, but nope, still got out. Today we were smart though and at least shut the gate so he couldn't leave the living room.

Fortunately, he was totally fine both days. He didn't destroy anything, potty anywhere, everything seems fine. We were going to phase out the crate in September (I'm getting laid off next Friday) since I'll be home most of the time anyway, but I guess we'll be doing it now! He IS crate trained, but since he's crated all night I don't want him crated 16 hrs/day. Doesn't really seem fair. So I guess we'll have him penned into the living room, making extra sure any small objects are picked up and paper products are out of reach! I don't want him all over the house because he torments the cats.

Muggsy would always be in the kitchen behind the baby gate when I got home from work. One day, he greeted me at the front door, then jumped over the gate to wait to be let out of the kitchen. Smart and stupid all at the same time.
