ok well, some of you have helped me greatly in the past and i will also post a recent pic of my precious Toby

well, basically the title says it all

1 1/2 year old almost and STILL eating poo??

we tried the pineapple juice in his bowl, all that did was make him scarf it down faster and want even more

normally he goes when my dad and him go for walks in the morning, but sometimes hes outside alone, EVEN with his muzzle on he gets the poo inside his mouth... and well...eats it

please tell me WHAT else to do!!! this is a very nasty habit and i don't like him doing it, especially if he randomly LICKS your face if you give him a chance lol

Heres his pic

I've heard that putting meat tenderizer in their food can help with the poop eating. Otherwise you will just need to pick it every single time he goes. If he is eating it before you can get run over to pick it up then teach him a leave it command.

Something I have been thinking about trying with a dog at work who is very bad about poop eating is rewarding him for leaving the poop pile by letting him go back and eat a small amount of it. Not sure if it will work or not but sometimes telling them they can do something makes it no longer a really fun thing to do. Also, putting the poop eating on command may help extinguish the behavior as long as the dog never gets to it any other time than when you say for awhile. But that is all just something I have been mulling over in my head at the moment, I am getting close to trying it out so we will see.

Hmmm, my 10 year old beagle still eats poo!

And dirty socks. And dirty diapers. And used femenine hygeine products. And underwear. You name it, she'll eat it. You haven't lived until you've pulled a green sock out of your dogs butt.

I think I kind of gave up long ago and went into management mode. Got trash cans with lids, make the kids put their clothes in the hamper, etc. Pick up the poop from the yard. But I swear that hound can smell dog poop on walks from 20 feet away and snatches at it before I can even see it. I'm working on leave it with her, but who knows how well that will work. She's quick and can find the dog poop and eat it before I even realize what's happening...

Wally won't eat his own poo (at least no immediately) but he'll try to eat everyone elses.

If he's going to eat poo - I'd rather it be his.

I know I have to be on top of him to tell him to leave it or walk directly at him from head on to back him off it.

Otherwise, the only thing I know to do is keep getting leave it solid (I need to practice it more outside, been slacking in that) and get ready to call him off it.

Supposedly they grow out of it - but does a dog ever grow out of eating crap off the ground?

There is only one sure fire cure....keep the yard clean. I go out with my dogs and carry the pooper scooper with me. Well, truthfully, when it's raining like it is now, I stand in the doorway and call them back in as soon as they're done. But. the point is, clean-up the best solution.

You can try Cayenne pepper on the poo too, or just plain pick it up immediately; I think picking poo up is the best viable option!

What kind of food is he on, by chance? For some dogs, eating their poo is a way of getting mineral or vitamins they are lacking in their current diet. Switching their diet can help curb it.

Might take a while, and it might be kinda gross to do, but you could "Put it on Cue".....

That is, reward him for eating it, then start accociating a word with it so he does it on command.....

Than stop giving the command and he'll never give the behavior.

Read that one in "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Positive Training". Good book.

I persoanlly would advise agaisnt using any of the products that claim to make his poo taste bad to him, these produsts usually have the idea that things with strong tastes such as paprika or tabasco will be disgusting to the dog. But it has actually been found that most dogs like it becuase of the strong taste. Dogs have different taste buds to us, and not very good ones, so the stronger something is the more it tastes to them and they usually prefer it!!

The best thing would be to either clean up as quickly as possible or to look at his diet and see whether you can give him some more nutrients or vitamns becuase that may be the reason that he is eating his poo.

Normally when he does have to poo, and i DO catch him trying to eat it i just grab the waterhose and spray it down to basically nothing, the problem is catching him do it.

hes eating Puring One, the one year old stage food

and its normally 1 rather large bowl of it in the mornings after a walk with my dad
You might want to try a different dog food. Purina is pretty high in grains (Corn, Oats) which doesn't digest very well. Basically, it just passes through and is still good to eat. Try a brand that has 3 meat ingredients in the top 4 listed ingredients.

Shippo came to me as a poop eater. He was a little puppy, so didn't know the "leave it" command yet. I had to take him out in the yard on a leash for the first month I had him to prevent him from getting to the poop. After he went, I'd pick it up immediately.

Ok, are you suggesting we do the canned dog foods or just find a different dry food?

it shouldn't be hard at all to find a diff brand
