state of the art kennels

If you had to design a 20 run kennel, what would you do to make it a breeze to clean… and I’m not talking about the gutter in front or back of the runs… something that doesn’t involve getting dirty and a lot of hard work…

I had to board my younger 2 while I was in the hospital once. I was gone for 14 days and it was horrible for me to leave them in a kennel. The kennel I chose was owned by a friend of mine and had separate indoor suites. Each of the suites had a them and a special little bed. Oliver got to stay in the log cabin suite and he had a 4 poster log bed with a very thick mattress. He had his own TV and a lot of toys. He went out for walks with a handler every day and had time in the outdoor yard that is fenced and covered. Lulu had the princess suite and it was adjoining to the log cabin suite so they could be together part of the time or separate if they chose. Her bed was a more elegant looking princess bed and she also had her own TV. She got to walk each day as well and they played in the yard together for a few hours a day. When I picked them up my friend said they both slept together in the log cabin bed. lol Guess my babies were happy with a rustic feel.

The kennel had many luxury amenities like water therapy (which they didn't care for) and some spa treatments and bathing. It was kept very clean but I have to say, it wasn't an easy to clean set up. I should think there would have been much easier set ups. (from a man power standpoint)

Right now im attending triple crown… sooo the other day I got to wondering, what the top of the line kennel would look like… and to be honest there has to be a more efficient way of cleaning kennels… the gutters that most kennels have will just not do… if you have them in the front, u have to walk into the kennel and spray all poop out (cleaning this way is very mess, and water and poop splatter everywhere)… however when u have the gutter in the inside u can spray the water into the kennel keeping things a little cleaner, but there is also I flaw to this the poop gets stuck underneath the run walls… so that’s y I dislike the gutters…

The purpose of this kennel would be for boarding, and training… someone should design a self cleaning kennel that would work kindda like a car wash.. Ok lol so maybe not, but I wonder if u could run a pvc pipe(or something eles like it) along the inside wall the would spray high presser water out and spray water into a gutter… I think something like this would save time and money…

As far ass a play/potty area I would fence that in and have the ground be sand… that would make it a breeze to clean…
Well you scoop poop 1st and then hose urine etc into gutters.
As someone that used to work at a very highly regarded kennel that kept the dogs in traditional kennel runs, I have a very specific question for those of you that love those "Mattress and sofa" places.

How are those mattresses and sofas disinfected in between borders? You have no idea if the dog in there before you was a puker, pee-err or stress-diarrhea-er. And when boarding dogs, there are plenty that fit into each category.

Sorry, but I'd prefer to keep my dog in a place where the surfaces are able to ALL be disinfected, no matter what they are used to at home.

In the case of the kennel I was at the mattresses are vinyl on the outside and have removable/washable covers. Much like hospitals that have the same puke, poo and pee problems. :)

Sounds like a nice place Inga.

When we were looking at this one kennel many years ago, what we liked is some of the kennels runs/rooms could be opened with a gate to convert to a larger one. This allowed for our two dogs to sleep/hang out together, instead of being separated.
I was trying to point out that many high end (state of the art) boarding places have gotten away from runs/kennels. They offer communal rooms, sofas, chairs, Animal Planet TV, the dogs are free to mingle (by size) all day and only go in their separate kennels at night.

This is somewhat common in our area. The one closest to us has 4 communal bays for the various sizes. My dogs have been there with no interaction problems.
Yes exactly the problem.

I know they have places like this out there. Just because it works for some dogs doesn't mean all dogs should be left in such an environment.

The idea is a combination of Doggie Daycare but, they're also a Boarding Kennel. It's certainly true that some dogs are not suited for Daycare environments. In that case, they don't get to socialize....they're handled the same way the daycares handle it....they're sent to their rooms.
Oh I do understand. They can be kept in their rooms if one wishes to still have their dog in a non kennel but more home like environment.

My original reply was the answer to what the author had wrote as to why cages vs communal. Some dogs are not to be kept in communal settings. Not that they can't go to a nice boarding facility in a room complete with sofa/tv, ect.

Though I do wonder about dogs tearing the stuff up? Is the owner liable if the dog would tear up like a bed or sofa instead of behave? How does that work.
Some of these places have two beds in the suite for the dog...kind of a twin size regular bed and a donut bed on the floor. If the dog gets destructive, they remove them and they get to sleep on the ceramic floor (the floor and walls are ceramic tile).
Its not that you wouldn’t clean up the poop, I guess I worded that wrong. But the combination of diarrhea, throw up, hair, and dog food can clog up the gutters, drains, and fly up on you when you clean. To me personally if you had a more efficient way of cleaning it could save you time and money… you could maybe even eliminate a kennel cleaner.

Spicy in the case of my friends facility if the dog was tearing up the bed they might remove it for the dogs safety. Oliver chewed a little of his log cabin bed (he was a puppy) but I didn't get billed for it. Hey, it was a big chunk of wood complete with a nice soft spot to lay while chewing, to him. lol
