well...let me tell you it can be real haard...it took 30 minutes to give her half a pill...she is strong, stuborn, feisty and sneaky...she would pretend to swalloe it and as soon as i let go of her mouth she would spit it out...by the time we were done it was practically dissolved...so dont be fooled by those small weightless dogs...they are stronger than we think...

Saaaame problem with my cats! You'd think it'd be easy with something so small, but you'd be surprised! Have you tried one of those pill shooters? Vets often give them out to make it easier on us poor owners, haha.

if you put the pill in right, they cant spit it out.

hold the dog, or have someone else hold her. open her mouth and put the pill on the very back of her tongue and close her mouth before she can move the pill. then hold her mouth shut, and gently rub her throat (this will give them the urge to swallow). if you cant tell if she swallowed, then just hold her mouth shut for about 10-15 seconds. then just double check to make sure (dogs will normally shake right away and spit out the pill, but some are more crafty and wil wait and do it later. if no shaking occurs, then just open their mouth and check). if this is even too hard for her, you can always try putting the pill in her food, or a peice of cheese (ask your vet though, some pills are not good to mix with food). when you use the pill pockets, you dont have to use the whole thing. for really small dogs, or pills, i just rip them in halves or quarters. if you are unsure if you can use them b/c of her weight, i would again ask your vet.

We would stuff the pill in a hot dog at first until our dog wised up and ate the hot dog piece and spit out the pill. Then we just started putting them in by hand. We would just push the pill as far back in the mouth like purplex said but we would angle it to the back corner of the mouth and that would do the trick every time. We didn't even need to hold her mouth closed or strock her neck - she would automatically swallow if we got the pill far enough back. We would need to remove our hands fast though because her teeth would come down when she was swallowing, lol. She was a bit bigger though at 70 lbs.

I had the same problem. She would eat the treat then somehow manage to get the pill out and spit it onto the floor.

The only thing she inhaled and never spit out was liverwurst (sp?). Totally stinky, gross texture and yucky in general, but heaven to a dog. I highly recommend it! Not the healthiest thing you could use, but if it's just a small bit it's not going to hurt her.

Not as hard as giving a 3.2lb puppy medicine. I eventually had to go to back to the vet 2 days later and get the pills liquified so I could shove the liquid down her throat with a syringe. She actually liked that disgusting stuff because it was bacon flavored supposedly. It smelled awful.

Ha. Try giving Jonas liquid medicine. He knows what the syringe means and the minute he sees it he will bolt. Then it's a 20 minute ordeal trying to lure him out and squirt the stuff into his mouth. Generally most of it ends up on my face and hands.

Now pills. That little jerk. You just hand a pill to him and he'll eat it. Go figure.

I've had the most success with cheese or peanut butter. Some dogs will scarf the first little ball of cheese, but for some, like Shippo, I've had to make a couple little "fake" balls of cheese (no pill), feed those first, and then slip him the one WITH the pill and he'd scarf it.

I had to do this with some Metronidazole, because it just tastes REALLY nasty, and even with as sick as he was, I wasn't able to wrestle him to get that pill down his throat without something coating it LMAO.
