well we finally got some snow this year as its been very dry in Utah. Taking Hank out for a run, after about 20 min he had clumps of ice frozen in between his paws and I am sure wasn't comfortable and was difficult to remove, like getting snow clumped up on your shoe laces!

Any good suggestions on keeping snow/ice from clumping up? Also how long can a 4.5 month puppy tolerate the cold snow?

I saw a wax at petsmart a week ago, it's meant for hot and cold/snow. So maybe that might help protect his paws? I found it near the shampoos. I bought some because it gets incredibly hot here in the desert, and can be really hard on their paws.

No actual experience though, sorry. Just a thought.. :)

Keep the fur trimmed (if he'll let you) between his paws.

Boots are an option, but it takes time to teach the dog to tolerate them. Most will walk like they have four broken legs until they figure out that "boots" mean "walk."

I always shave out in between the feet and toes.

If you cant/dont have the tools to do so. Call a groomers, ask them if they will let you walk in for that to be done. shouldnt cost more then 10 bucks.
