We're trying to get Percy to make it through the night with no fussing when we have to get him up for wee (he's 8 weeks) and I have a query. He sleeps almost all day, he's been asleep from 9.45am and is still asleep now at 1.20pm. He gets all energetic again at about 3pm and then falls asleep at 7pm for maybe 2 hours. I know you should let a sleeping dog lie but should I try and make him more active throughout the day to help the nights? I'm wondering if his body clock is all out of wack because the breeder worked nights? Or do most puppies sleep all day and all night?

Making him be more active during the day probably won't help him make it through the night yet. . .he's just too young right now. And, yeah, young puppies sleep a LOT. Just wait a month or so, you won't be able to slow him down!

Unfortunately, expecting an 8 week old pup to sleep through the night is like expecting a 3 month old human baby to sleep through the night- really, really unrealistic.

Let him sleep when he wants to. Sleep is very important for proper brain development in babies of all species.

Young puppies sleep a LOT! Its not that his body clock is out of whack or anything like that, they just do sleep a lot!!

If you really want to try helping him sleep through the night, then you can do lighter/shorter exercise/walks earlier in the day, and then have the bigger walks later at night so that he is a little more tuckered out just before bed...but it probably won't make a whole lot of difference!

The big thing for helping him sleep through the night would be to stop giving water after 7pm. Just toss him a couple ice cubes if you think he is thirsty. Less water = less that needs to be held through the night.
