We've had a chihuahua for 3 years, and just got a new one a few months ago. It took them a while but they got used to each other and now they're inseparable.

What has been concerning me is that if theyre both laying down apart from each other, and I approach the newer dog, my older dog will get between us and look at me. He won't growl or snap or anything, but if I start to show the other dog any type of attention, he will stop whatever he's doing and try to get between us. If I scold him or push him to the side, he'll put his ears down and move away, but will still stay by her side while staring at me.

I'm not sure if he's jealous that I'm showing her affection, or "protecting" her.
