Has anyone heard of it? Short-term, as in 5 days max? Does it make a difference with the pain?

I'm trying to gather information and options for my 15 year old lab mix. He's got arthritis, hip dysplasia, spinal stenosis. He still got a great spirit tho, and things were going well for quite some time. He's on Previcox and Adequan. I don't think there's anything else out there for him and suddenly he started to get very wobbly and has trouble walking. He clearly needs help. I'm not so sure that it's pain, as he seems to be uncoordinated. He has nerve damage in the back legs due to the dysplasia and the stenosis...

I'm heartbroken. I want to help him badly, but I think I've come to an end ... I believe the last resort would be Prednisone. He was on it once for 4 months after getting IMHA. He had bad side effects in the end, so I am wondering whether a 5 day Prednisone therapy would make a difference?

Anyone have experience with this? He means the world to me, and I just want to help him.

Thanks. :(

What sort of bad effects did it have last time? Short term pred, as long as it is given correctly and WEANED off can help with any inflammation but it shouldn't be just five days and stop..this sends the adrenal glands all wacky.
At his age making him comfortable should be more important than long term effects. It's his quality of life that counts..have you spoken to your vet about the meds? Can you increase his other meds?

After about 3 1/2 months he developed severe nausea and diarrhea, besides the increased thirst and the excessive hunger (which was tolerable) and the hair loss (he's a newfie-lab mix with a big fluffy coat normally). The stomach problems sent us to the vet once every week ... it was bad.

I know, I know, it's all about comfort .... I'm probably just in denial or refusing to accept. :( I'm definitely going to talk to his vet again, though last time she said that he's already maxed out on all meds. The Previcox cannot be increased, he's at maximum dosage. The Adequan I increased to giving him a shot every week now to see whether it makes a difference.

Thanks for the info on the Prednisone. I'm going to keep it in mind when I talk to the vet next week. I'm hoping that this is just temporary ...

I could be mistaken, but I don't think you can do Previcox and Prednisone (or any steroid w/an NSAID). I had a dog that when in the final stages of acute arthritis of the spine was on Prednisone and Tramadol, and it helped a lot.
