People that work in shelter are suppose to be 'animal lovers', care and try their best to get an animal adopted no matter what species or breed etc.
Well, after the Teddy adoption down the drain our land lord informs us 3 days after he got adopted he is NOT SELLING US OUT....

I tried my best not to get heartbroken, but I had my hopes up to high before I could remind myself of the 'just in case' moment.

So because we are not getting sold out, we are on the shelter hunt again (with no luck as nothing is up to my moms standards -it'll be her dog- )

Today I met the sweetest dog, heres a picture

Cutie eh?

Well, I asked the shelter lady alittle about him and before I could even blink she said

"unfortunately , this is a pitbull mix. He really should be e..." - made some disgusted face

Before she could finish

Heres where I flipped and pretty much made everyone in the room around me either
a ) worship pits
b) scared shitless of me

"pits are the same as a lab, a dal , shepherd, poodle (etc) ....they have the same heart and love for people as any other dog, the way the media and morons have treated these animals have made fools like you treat these animals like they are rogue killers giving them no hope but guaranteed death. But educated people like myself, to us , you look like the biggest idiot i've ever met...shame on you for working here..."

Her employer heard the entire conversation and was pist at her open opinion on wanted the dog put to sleep because of his breed and actually praised me for standing up for him ( everyone knows the boss normally stands up for the employee)

My mother was there the entire time ( she hates pits too ) and was rotted at me for flipping and how she agreed with the employee on destroying him. She got a good talking to on the way home ... I sware I think im adopted sometimes

In dog training, many of us ignore unwanted behavior, reward desired behavior, and re-direct a dog when he or she goes astray.

Karen Pryor suggests that behavioral concepts apply to human, dogs, and goldfish.

I try to stay consistent across species.

That said, I wish you the very, very best in your search for a new pet and applaud you for looking at shelters. I hope a lucky dog enters your life very, very soon and brings you two decades of happiness and a life time of great memories.

Hi, You show great character!!! Just a thought, looks more like a Catahoula to me and you might want to check out their rescues!!! They are wonderful with saving "houlas" from shelters.
You seem to see Catahoula in nearly every dog posted on this forum. I don't see it nor do I see any pittie.

OP, good on you for standing up for the dog.

Unfortunately many shelters are that way. Most shelter employees got the job because they needed a job not because they love animals. To be blunt the job doesn't require a love for animals. I've been volunteering at my local shelter for years and I've recently decided to stop volunteering. It starts to harden you. My shelter is a high kill. There is no air conditioning, no ventilation, no windows.. just concrete and wire fencing inside a stuffy smelly compound. The runs are always too small for the dog. When they use the bathroom they sit in it until an employee comes by and sprays the run clean while the dog is still in the run. Being around that kind of atmosphere, and being unable to change it, really messes with many employees.

That employee may have had a bad experience with pit bulls or just disliked that dog in particular. I've been upset many times when a dog that had many issues got extra days when the sweet calm dog 2 runs down got pts. It sucks, but that's how many shelters are.

Thanks for giving the sweet looking dog a voice. I see terrier cross and not of the pitbull terrier variety either. Looks longer hair, and smaller build for a pitbull. Not the big muscular frame associated with pits. Face does not have the jowls or nose of a pit. Nope don't see pit, only a PITIFUL dog looking for/to give love.

Good for you. My favorite breeds are Labs, Rottweilers, Any bully breed and mastiff breeds and Have never owned anything else. Pretty much almost all of those breeds made the infamous "dangerous Dog" list. Currently I own an Old English Bulldogg and every where we go at least one person says, Is that a pittbull?? You can tell non dog savy people, every bull looking dog is a pitbull to them. Never mind the wrinkles and curly Q tail. Dogs are a product of their enviroments and owners. and unfortuneately pits ave been no other word but "targetted" by ignorant, selfish and abusive people who have exploited their breed beyond belief. I have met more sweet submissive loving pits that I can count and would recomend them as a family pet to any responsible, knowlegeable owner.

Like some of you said, to work in a shelter you don't have to 'love' each species and such, but personally you'd think that because of the rap people have giving pits and the fact they have such a tough time finding a home the least the shelter employees could do is help out getting the breed adopted.

Just saw this ... good for you! And that poor dog looks like a BC/Terrier of any sort mix to me .... I hope the dog finds a home.

I agree, I wrote something awhile ago on my blog about pits and their looks

Does racism only imply to humans? or all animals considering we are animals (**** sapiens ) Well, if your going to ask me - racism implies to all species ( some genius labeled it speciesism which isn’t viewed as in depth as racism… ).

“In the ’70s they blamed Dobermans, in the ’80s they blamed German shepherds, in the ’90s they blamed the Rottweiler. Now they blame the pit bull”

-Cesar Millan

Pit bulls are the worlds most ‘hated’ dog breed thanks to a bunch of morons who can’t fight their own battles but used these dogs to give them a rap as a rogue blood thirsty killer. Causing laws to ban the breed in some states, cities etc. However what people fail to understand that the term ‘Pit Bull’ is only referring to the way a dog looks, as a pit bull isn’t even a breed.

The pit bull looks falls generally under the american pit bull terriers & american stafforshire terrier, however with mixes bull dogs and boxers are labeled pits as well. Ever notice when a dog attack is on the news its only the pit bull ones, mean while the most ‘aggressive dog in the world’ is dachshund? The media ONLY gives you what you except to hear.

Racism.
When I first met this guy pitbull never even crossed my mind nor my moms.

Here's some good news about a shelter! One in the north suburbs of Chicago received over a million dollars bequest to build an animal clinic and staff it in connection with the shelter! I know its helped the dogs/cats quite a bit, as well as the people who work there tirelessly. Saved more pets. Sorry you ran into someone negative...nothing like a pit look either from me!
