Poor Teddie boy got me thinking..I thought dogs couldn't get salmonella?!

I've fed raw diets, and a lot of people do, but if there is salmonella on it, I thought they couldn't get it, that their stomach acids were strong enough to fight it..

So dogs CAN get it??

Yes, but most are not affected in any way by it.

Dogs that do get sick from salmonella are usually because there is an imbalance in their stomach bacteria or else their immune system was weakened by something else.

There are a lot more common things to worry about than salmonella. I think salmonella is highly over diagnosed in dogs. If the vet can't determine another cause, they automatically blame it on salmonella, particularly if they know you feed raw.

Worry about injuries. Worry about getting run over by a car. Worry about getting bitten by a snake. Worry about him getting injured by another dog. Don't spend a lot of energy worrying about salmonella. Confirmed cases of salmonella in dogs is almost nonexistant.

If your dog happens to be one of the rare ones that gets sick from salmonella, he will probably have diarrhea for a few days, may vomit a few times and will be fine in 3 or 4 days. By far the greatest number of dogs infested with salmonella never know it.

suprised me, i would have thought that they were immune.
I think we read the same article and came away with different information. The article pretty much pointed out that although dogs and cats can have the salmonella bacteria in their bodies, they are asymptomatic. They don't get sick. To me, thats pretty much what "immune" means.
