"Kalamazoo County Animal Services and Enforcement Officer Mark Vanderberg recently responded to a call in which a dog had been hit by a car. Taped to the dog's collar was a bag with a note which said 'Help Me.' The note gave a list of the dog's attributes and the message, 'Please take care of me. My name is Copper.' Instead of taking the dog to a shelter, the owners let it loose in the Oshtemo area, where it was hit and killed."

What a waste. Why do people do things like this when there are so many options for finding a good caretaker for a dog?

Oh my gosh how sad The note just breaks my heart.. he was obviously loved seeing as they taught him all those tricks and took the time to write the note. I wonder why they abandoned him instead of taking him to a shelter? Maybe it was a child who's parents told them they had to let the dog go or something? Oh how terrible.

I hope they find out who did that. If I were the judge in that case I would have the person responsible stand in the downtown section with a sign that said I abandoned my dog with a note to take care of him and he was hit by a car and died. That would be in addition to some time in the county jail.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! My god that pisses me off. That happened no more then 30mins from where I live. I tell ya, Michigan residents seem to drop IQ levels every single day. It seems like the worse the depression.. I mean recession is, the worse people get. It is getting so bad up here because of job loss between a rise in theft and abandoned animals. The shelters are getting crowded and many animals are getting killed in the roads.

Hey, I live in Kalamazoo. I went into full rage when I saw that article. I'm pretty sure that note is written by a child, so way to teach your child responsibility. You have something you don't want/can't have anymore, so just toss it out like trash, even if it's a living creature.

Great, I am now crying after reading that. I guess it brings back memories of my own father who drove our sweet doggie into the country and abandoned him -- the second I realized what he had done I insisted we drive around to try to find him but we couldn't. I HATE anyone who would do such an evil thing to a poor defenseless pup. I'm going to forward this story to my dad and say "see how hideously evil you are????"

I hope the owners of Copper see those pictures of their dog dead on the road, and I hope they get as physically ill as I just did.

Stupid pieces of @(*$. Times are tough for everyone. I understand it. There are other options instead of ditching your dog and letting it get HIT BY A CAR, probably while it was LOOKING FOR ITS OWNERS.

Here is another thing to Think about, Kalamazoo is the Headquarters for the UKC and where the UKC holds a lot of it's main shows.

Really? There must be more Michiganders! I was just going to make a thread come nicer weather to see if I can lure anyone into play dates from around the area.

Are you in the Battle Creek area? I'm terrible with the area right now. I'm originally from Kalamazoo, lived in Ann Arbor for a while, and I'm just back in the area.

I've been to a good lot of the UKC shows around here. I know nothing about showing, but doesn't mean I don't like to watch dogs all day.
