This is just how "I" rotate .... not necessarily the correct way .... if there really is one?
I use one brand of dog food as a main source and rotate the other foods as additives. I feel this way they are getting the benefits of the different foods and tastes to keep their meals interesting ... but don't really have to switch ... such as cold turkey. You do not want to switch cold turkey ... this can cause major digestive upsets.
I use 4Health as my staple. I use 2/3 cup of the 4Health and add 1/3 cup of the other food ... let's say as an example ... for one bowl of food for my big dog at her dinner time. Always more of the staple food and less of the rotation food. I hope this makes sense?
I have used TOTW, Acana, Blue Buffalo, and Wellness. I use mostly poultry based foods. Some different foods depending on what you choose to feed ... may have a tad of other proteins in them sometimes.
I don't switch proteins ... such as chicken that I use on a regular basis ... to fish or lamb often ... because my dogs are not fond of fish or lamb. I am saving those foods just in case my dogs should acquire a food allergy or intolerance at some point to poultry. Then they will just have to like it or go hungry! Lol!
Switching proteins is supposed to be good and helps to keep these food allergies at bay. Dogs can become allergic to eating the same protein day after day ... is what I understand.
I use a 35 pound bag of 4Health monthly and I use 2 different 5 or 6 pound bags per month as my additive foods. I switch the 5 and 6 pound brands every other month.
My dogs are not on a totally grain-free diet. I imagine it is a bit different from the normal way most folks rotate ... the way I do it ... but the dogs are all healthy, no gas, no digestive or intestinal upsets ... and not complaining.
