my boxer puppy Tyson is 8 weeks old today. i got him from a breeder at 6 weeks old. about 2 days ago i noticed that he had a red circle, about the size of a penny, on his belly. i then noticed 3 more that aren't as noticeable. that night he had diarrhea. before he fell asleep for the night i put a little bit of neosporin on the circles just to soothe them...even though i have not seen him scratch or bite at them at all. Just a few minutes ago today i saw that he has yet another one of these circles on his inner ear. this one is quite a bit bigger, about the size of a nickel. all of them are dried up in the center now, and his diarrhea has stopped. he is still eating, drinking, and playing as he normally does, but i dont want to just overlook those circles. the first thing that popped into my head was ringworm. i am going to take him to the vet sometime within the next few days, after i can make an appointment, but i would really like to hear what you all think this could be.

Please get your pup to the vet, it sounds an AWFUL lot like ringworm which is HIGHLY contagious. If you get him @ 6 weeks old you probably had a less than desirable breeder (pups should NEVER leave mom before 8 weeks in fact in some states it's illegal to separate them before then) so you will need to be even more diligent if you see anything unusual.

Totally agree, it sounds like ringworm. You'll have to wash your hands thouroughly after handling him. And yes he shouldn't have left the litter until at least 8 weeks. Download the book "Before You Get Your Puppy" by Dr Ian Dunbar at www.dogstardaily.com so you know how to socialise him & get to know the stages he will go through. It takes you to the 1st month at home presuming you got the pup at 8 w/o. All puppies should be taken to the vets in the 1st few days at a new home so you can find out about vaccinations, worming & neutering etc.
Enrolling in a good puppy pre school is also a good idea.
Tyson is a very cute puppy, but you already knew that.;)

thank you both for answering me. :) and yes i know we got him kinda early, but he did have his first set of shots and dewormind done, and was already on dry food when we got him. and i will be taking him to the vet this week even though the spots do look as though they may be getting better. but i dont want to just overlook it. and thank you DogsforMe. I really liked your other tip about not letting him grow too quickly since he is a large breed dog. i will have to look more into that.

just an update....

tyson has seen the vet and they agreed that it may very well be ringworm. i got a special medicated shampoo and a spray. i also got some antibiotics to give him. Other than that he was perfectly fine, perfect temp. and clean stool tests. The only other thing they pointed out was that he's not as thick as they would like him to be. A little bony on the hips. So they recommended that we start him on a different dog food. They gave us purina pro plan. I've mixed it in with his other food and he seems to like it. hopefully this will help him keep on some weight.

Antibiotics? for what? Ringworm is a fungus, antibiotics only work on bacteria and can make a fungal infection WORSE.

oh sorry....the antibiotics are actually for some respitory thing the vet thinks he may have...it's something that our little yorkie had, and tyson just started doing the same coughing/choking/hacking sounds a few days ago so the doctor has both of them on that antibiotic. the only thing for the ringworm that we got is the shampoo and the spray. sorry for not explaining myself very well.

JUST AN UPDATE SO FAR:

ok so far the shampoo and spray for the ringworm seems to be working very well. the spots are drying up and i can tell (mostly from the ring that's in his ear) that they are fading away as well. as for the antibiotics for the whole respitory thing...they dont seem to be doing anything for either one of the puppies...but today was only their 4th day on it so hopefully by the time the bottle is empty it will have helped them. if not then it's back to the vet...
