I have an American Eskimo pup who is 10 weeks old and so far we haven't given him any preventative meds. I was researching brands and I've pretty much decided on K9 Advantix. If I use K9 Advantix, which also repels and kills mosquitoes do I need to get heartworm meds? I live in San Francisco right by the beach, so most of the times it is cool and foggy. Also, I live next door to an elderly man who has 2 dogs and they look very dirty and possibly very infested with fleas. We have a 6 foot high wooden plank fence, but I'm concerned that fleas and whatever other bad stuff his dogs have can get through the cracks and get my puppy sick. What should I do about that? My family grows a lot of vegetables in the yard, so I don't exactly want to get some of that flea killing pesticide and spray the whole fence..

As far as heartworms, the safest thing is to ask a local Vet. He may also suggest something for fleas.

We used to spread Sevin dust around the perimeter of the property. You might also try Ortho Home Defense Maxx from Home Depot etc. around the fenceline. Or Orange oil and diatomaceous on the fenceline should be very safe.

Anecdotally, you could try planting a row of Mint on your side of the fence to repel fleas... but I don't know if this works...
