I've put a deposit down on a pup from a breeder and when I recently got back photos I was a little concerned by red marks on some of the ears and shoulders of the puppies. It almost looks like they were bleeding, but I wasn't sure if it was normal.

Since I've never whelped a litter of puppies or observed it I couldn't be sure if it was from other puppies chewing on their ears, from the mother, from the birthing process, birthmarks, or from tattooing the pups (the breeder said they would be tattooed and had dewclaws removed but I thought tattooing was done on the inside of the leg). I'm attaching images to the post. Can anybody identify what's going on?

Looks like nailpolish. :p Some breeders who have single-color litters (which are the norm in some breeds- like Goldens ;P) will put nail polish on pups (a different place on each puppy) to ID them at a glance. (Other breeders shave a small spot on each puppy, and still others use collars.) It doesn't come off when licked like marker does, either.

Yup looks like the red marks are ID's for the pups. If you notice most of the marks are differeent for each pup. Though sometimes a boy and girl might have the same mark it's quite easy to sort out which is the boy and which is th girl.
