My dog’s whiskers have something odd that I haven’t seen in other dog’s whiskers. Most of her whiskers are normal and consistently thick. However, she randomly grows some here and there that get really thin and light in color in the middle. Basically, starting at the tip, it will be black and thick, and then suddenly get hair thin and pale, before getting thick and dark again. This makes those whiskers pretty odd as it looks like thick whiskers bouncing on normal hairs. The sudden change on the same whisker I’ve always thought was curious. I sometimes go and remove them because the whisker will snap off in the middle like a dead twig at the slightest tug.
My question I guess is, why do some of the whiskers grow in like this and can they still function like normal whiskers given the way they dangle? Are they like dead hairs?
