We have a new puppy, he is 16 weeks old. We rescued him from down south. We also have an older dog that we crate trained and it went smoothly. This puppy will sleep through the night fine, without whining, until we get to the last hour before we get them up to eat and go out. So he is whining that whole last hour. I know he is due to go outside to go to the bathroom, but he runs downstairs and wants to eat first. He is very food motivated and he knows it is time to eat as well and he thinks that is more important. We tried to have an alarm go off every time we get up so he is used to that noise and we still don't get up until it goes off. But he is still whining that last hour, we've tried to tell him to lay down, he will for a couple minutes and start again. I know if it was just needing to go to the bathroom, we would let him out and go back in the crate for the rest of the time, but he continues to whine at that point as well. Any ideas to keep him calm that last hour? We have the crate in our bedroom and tried putting a blanket over it as well. We left the door part un-covered. Should we just put the crate in another room? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

PS. The dog is a mix of Anatolian Shepard and Great Pyrenees. He is 16 weeks old.

Sounds like too much energy. Walk him for 30 minutes a day at least, best is twice a day 30 minutes each. Best times to walk are right when you wake up, and then again after you get back home from work or whatever in the evening.
