Our new puppy Mabel is 5 months old, she is well trained on her puppy pads now however we are unsure when/how to make the transition from puppy pads to going to toilet outside.

She is a very stubborn & lazy pup who doesn't really like going outside anyway which doesn't help.

So please any ideas on how to make the transition from puppy pads to outdoor toileting would be much appreciated

Many Thanks Leona x

How did you train her to use the pads?

I am not a big fan of using pads to begin with (due to my own personal experience I would never use them again with future pups or recommend them). However, since you already used them, here are some ideas on how to transition.

Some folks say to start moving the pad closer and closer to the door you would be taking her out of to get outside.
Some folks say stop using pads cold turkey, and just be very vigilant about watching her and preventing accidents so she doesn't even have the chance to pee inside.
Another thing to do is to put one of her soiled pads outside in the area that you want her to start using for her outside area.

The most important thing, in my opinion, is, when you are changing her routine, as you are doing when you try to change where she is supposed to pee, you really need to be extra careful about keeping your eyes on her 100% of the time, unless she's asleep or crated. That way, you can STOP her before she pees in the wrong place.

And, take her outside more than you think you need to.

Our puppy was pad trained before we got him, and our vet told us the take the pads away cold turkey and just take him outside once an hour, and 10 minutes after he eats. You have to go out with them and praise them for doing their job.
