Hello,
I have a 14 week old German Shepherd and recently found out he has a heart murmur. The doctor said on a scale of 1-6 it is a 3. Now a have to get him an EKG and sonogram to see what else may need to be done. I was just wondering if anyone else had similar experiences? What is the best case and worst case scenario? What is the treatment? Is this usually hereditary / genetic?
Have you talked to his breeder about this? does she know if it's an issue in his lines? I believe there is medication that gan be given for the rest of the dogs life but not sure.
Some of it depends on what the issue is. Some puppy murmurs are innocent and will resolve on their own, but a Gr 3 is pretty severe. Best of luck with your diagnostics. I would go ahead with the Doppler Echo asap if I were you.
It depends on the source of the murmur, a sonogram is probably your best bet to ascertain this and whether it will require medication or surgery or both. Some minor (grade 1 or 2) murmurs resolve themselves as the dog matures, but anything higher than that is likely to require treatment of some sort.
My 7 month old Pom I just found out has a PDA heart murmur and of course needs further testing to confirm. With the tests complete the vet said that Jazzy will need heart surgery to close her heart valve or she could die within 3 years. I would say go to a specialist and confirm that they hear the murmur. Do you have pet insurance by any chance???
