My 8 month old shitzu doesn't like rubber chew toys of any kind. He only likes to chew on hard plastic harness latches or shoes. I don't like the ides of him being poisioned with plastic and same with shoes and sandals. I don't want to give him rawhide bones to chew on all the time either. Suggestions please

Definitely keep him away from those latches and such, they could break into shards and cause serious injury if swallowed.

Rawhides are risky for bowel obstruction.

No chew is 100% safe but if he likes hard chews, deer or elk antlers and cow hooves are relatively safe. Mostly a chance of breaking a tooth biting down hard. Hooves are stinky, very barnyard smell. But that just adds to the popularity for the average dog :)

Yeah, you don't want him chewing on things like shoes or buckles.

Rawhides can be downright dangerous... I quit giving those a long time ago, after having to reach down the throat of a choking dog to pull a hunk out.

Good hard chews include the antlers and cow hooves already mentioned, as well as man-made things like Nylabones and Kongs.

Somewhat softer natural chews include pizzles (bully stick, whatever you want to call it), tendons, and backstraps.
