If I were having this issue I'd pop the dog back in the crate for 3-5 minutes after an unsuccessful potty outing, then try again. Rinse and repeat until they actually potty, then go to bed. It's a huge pain, yes, but better than cleaning up accidents.

Are you continuing the early morning potty breaks regardless of whether he's barking or not? It might be worth it to try to get him out on a schedule before he usually starts barking, so he doesn't have a chance to amp himself up barking in the crate and get too excited to potty once outside.
