We have a 5 month old border collie / shepherd mix.

Starting at around twilight and lasting until bed time, she refuses to sit still or even play with us. She just wants to roam the house sniffing all the corners and crannies. When we take her out, she'll potty and then immediately want to go sniffing off somewhere (contrasting her behavior earlier in the day when she wants to come in and play).

She gets plenty of exercise during the day, has lots of stimulating toys, and gets plenty of food at dinner.

We've only had her two weeks and she is not fully housetrained, so we need to keep an eye on her when she does this.

What is going on?

Should we be crating her during this time?

Thanks!

Twilight is when nocturnal things come alive. Is it possible she's seen, heard or smelled a mouse, bat, etc, even just once? Maybe even in her previous home?

I'd clicker this. First, prime the clicker. (kikopup on YouTube explains this.) then, click any time she stops sniffing, even for a second. If she glances at you, click. What you're eventually aiming at is clicking calm behavior and interacting with you. This may take some time. Encourage interaction with really great treats, like cooked chicken or liver.

Crating will be easier on you, but is unlikely to change the root behavior.
