My 10 month old sheltie/schnauzer mix had surgery to fix his femur. He was sent home 2 days ago and still has not pooped. He is on clavamox and rimadyl. I dont know if they have him constipated or not. I know being not as active and the pain meds he was on might have backed him up. He has been eating drinking and urinating, just no poop. I was wondering what foods for dogs will help them go poop or soften it? I know people can eat raisins(not dogs), and things like that. If anyone has any advise I would love to hear it! Thanks!

Canned pumpkin (not pie filling). Or something with a little fat in it like some raw meat. Or a Tablespoon of olive oil on his food or a teaspoon of bran or psyllium (if he's for sure drinking enough water). You can also add water directly to his food to insure that.

Can he walk? Lots of walks would be good.

Just to gross everyone out - when I have taken pain meds in the past it certainly did cause constipation.

When in doubt, call your vet. Phone calls are always free!

Thanks for the info. Ill try the pumpkin. I put some olive oil in some scrambled eggs for him and gave him a little raw piece of fat off a steak. Im thinking because he cant move around to much his bowels just arent moving quickly. He can only walk around for 5 minutes at a time to go potty for the next 3-4 weeks and then we can increase his walking by 5 more minutes. His bones are still soft. He is peeing alot so I know he's not dehydrated. Thanks again!! :)
