We got Cthullu last Tuesday from an animal hospital. He's a 1yr old Great Pyrenees, and he was at the hospital as a stray for about 3 months. His elbows both have bald spots about the size of half dollars, and the skin is very red. The vet tech said it was from him being stuck in a cage for so long. I'm just wondering if they'll go away over time, and if there's anything I should do to help them heal? I read that giving him a soft bed to sleep on can help, and he sleeps on the couch a lot, but he also likes to sleep in the bathtub, and the concrete basement floor...

Is there anything I should be doing about these sores, or should I just leave them alone?

Yes, that is caused by too long in the crate. It's very common with overcrated dogs. Kabota had those when I got him. The rescue told me to make sure he sleeps/lays on soft surfaces, couches, beds, blankets, pillows, carpet and not directly on a hard surface like wood or tile. I also bought pure vitamin E (tocopherol acetate) at the drug store and rubbed it into the sores once a day. That seemed to help. (Pure vitamin E is sticky, so take care not to get it in the fur.) I let Kabota lick the excess off my fingers when I'm done. He seems to think it's delicious.

After a few months, I noticed that the spots were still bald, but pink rather than an angry red. I don't think he's ever getting the fur back entirely.
