I would not give pred for anything that may be a cancer I would want to treat. It is a great medication for many things but it reduces the effectiveness of chemo if given for more than a few days. Call the vet. Ask the questions and get definitive answers - and don't give the pred until you have them.

(That said, there are a lot of lumps and bumps that aren't cancer and that, yes, steroids can help with. I'm more of the feeling that if he thought it was cancer he wouldn't have prescribed, but I'd still want definitive proof/evidence or at least to have the vet explain their thinking to me.)
