My 10 year old chihuahua/dachshund mix just had his spleen removed due to auto immune disorder. We tried all the immune suppresent drugs (over a course of 1 1/2 years) of which none worked, so the only option left was a splenectomy.
He pulled through the surgery fine on Thursday, came home on Friday (blood count 37), was great Saturday and Sunday and then crashed with a fever and aniema on Monday (blood count down to 26) which put him back in the hospital.
Yesterday (blood count down to 20) he was given half a blood transfusion but his fever spiked, so they are giving him the rest today.
They originally took him off his cyclosporin and Azathioprine cold turkey. But kept him on one predisone. Now they have added back in his cyclosporin as of yesterday. They want to wait 24 to 48 hours to see what happens.
They also are thinking about spiking his platelet count with some contriversial drug...TBD
He is eating and looks perky.
Does anyone have any information on this or suggestions? I am dying overhere of a broken heart! I don't know when enough is enough and since he is perky how do I pull the plug?
