I have a 1yr old Golden retriever. She is very petite about 55lbs. We had a neglectful dog sitter over the weekend and my baby ate a sock (which we weren’t told about). Sunday afternoon when we got home I noticed something wasn’t right and by Monday morning she was brought to the ER. By Monday afternoon she was having full surgery to remove the sock from her stomach. The surgeon also suggested we have her fixed at the same time since the incision would be in the same spot, so we did.

She was in the ICU until Tuesday afternoon and we brought her home. She is only on a low dose of Gabapentin for pain. She only wanted ham slices on Tuesday, which is fine we gave her some just so she would have it in her stomach.

She is drinking water. But Wednesday, she would only have about 1 ham slice. Nothing else we’ve tried peanut butter treats chicken apple sauce chips (her favorite)

Then around 4pm on Wednesday she threw up. So we rushed her right back to the emergency room and they gave her fluids, anti nausea meds and an anti acid. They also did a blood panel because she had a slight fever and her white blood count was slightly high but her fever began to go down and they said her white blood count was in the range they would expect after surgery. She has also lost about 10lbs in 14 days and has ZERO bowl movements only pee.

We brought her home and cooked up ground turkey. She has refused to eat ANYTHING. And now when she drinks water she burps and throws a little of it up…

please help…

I'm sorry this is happening to you. The very best thing you can do is keep in close contact with your vet, and don't be afraid to call and ask if they think anything is abnormal or requires you to bring her back in. Please do ask your vet if the lack of appetite and weight loss is normal. I'm sure your vet would be happy to put your mind at ease and help you determine what is normal after a major surgery and what might be concerning.

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes yes we are in constant contact. They ran blood work yesterday to determine if she was bleeding out or infection, nothing was noted. They gave her fluids and a bunch of meds to calm her stomach. The lack of appetite is normal for 24 hours after surgery but not this long. None of her meds would cause this much of a lack of appetite. We will need to bring her back by this afternoon if she still hasn’t eaten. The vet seems a little at a loss as to why she has no thrive so that is why I am just searching high and low if ANYONE has any answers or help..

I would probably have a barium series done, to see if there is an additional blockage in her intestines. If could be that the sock they found in her stomach wasn't the only thing she ate.

Ok I will ask! They did say that during the surgery they did look through her entire intestine and the blood pannel yesterday did not indicate a foreign object was present
